Fellowship in Public Psychiatry - Program Description
Program Description - APA Fellowship in Public Psychiatry
Funded through an unrestricted educational grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb
The purposes of the American Psychiatric Association/Bristol-Myers Squibb Public Psychiatry Fellowship Program are to (1) provide experiences that will contribute to the professional development of residents who will play future leadership roles within the public sector psychiatry and (2) heighten awareness of the public psychiatry activities and career opportunities. Since the program's founding in 1980, the fellowship has been awarded to more than 300 outstanding residents.
Benefits of the Fellowship:
APA/Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellows are active participants in selected APA components and the Institute on Psychiatric Services (IPS). Based on their expressed interests, fellows are assigned to an APA component and take part in all deliberations, projects, and initiatives. They receive sponsorship to attend component meetings held in September in Washington, DC and other meetings as appropriate.
For many years, APA/Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellows have had prominent roles in the Institute on Psychiatric Services. The program provides sponsorship to attend two Institutes. Over the course of the fellowship term, fellows work collaboratively to plan a series of workshops that will be presented at their second IPS. Members of the Fellowship Selection Committee serve as mentors in this process.
Each fellowship class selects representatives to the APA's Board of Trustees and Joint Reference Committee, as well as to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists.
Funding to attend the APA Annual Meeting or component meetings held during it is not provided.

Fellowship Nomination Procedures Annually, each accredited psychiatric residency program is invited to nominate one outstanding resident who (1) has a substantial interest in psychiatric services for the seriously ill and under-served populations and (2) demonstrates significant potential for assuming a leadership role in public systems of care.
The nomination should be in the form of a letter from the department chair or training director, providing details about the candidate and those accomplishments and activities that would justify his/her selection. Accompanying the letter should be the resident's completed application form, as well as a personal statement, not to exceed two pages, indicating his/her reasons for wanting the fellowship and the ways in which it will contribute to his/her career plans.
Submission of a nomination represents an explicit commitment by the residency program to permit the candidate, if selected, time off to attend APA meetings in their entirety during the fellowship term, as well as the candidate's willingness to do so.
Psychiatric residents who are members of the APA and entering the PG-3 year of training during the fellowship term are eligible to participate in this program. Residents who will be in the PG-4 year will also be considered, if they are in a 5-year psychiatric training program. Residents who have received (or are scheduled to receive) other APA fellowships or comparable outside fellowships (e.g., Ginsberg, Laughlin) are not eligible. In addition, those residents who currently serve on APA's Committee of Residents and Fellows are not eligible for the fellowship. Applications should be directed to:
