APA Innovative Teaching Grant
The American Psychiatric Association announces a new grant program for innovative medical student education projects. Five thousand dollars will be awarded to four selected projects for the 2008 calendar year. Successful projects may reapply for continued funding in 2009. Awards will be given for proposals in the following areas:
- Clinical teaching either psychiatric or multi-disciplinary settings
- Education about psychiatrically underserved populations
- Incorporating subspecialty experience into the clerkship
- Pre-clerkship exposure to psychiatry
- Efforts to combat stigma
How to Apply:
Interested educators should complete the application form and no more than a one-page narrative. At least one of the applicants must be a current APA member. Applications and letter of support must be received by electronically (either email or fax.). Deadline to receive applications is November 1, 2007. Submissions should be sent to education@psych.org or faxed to 703-907-7849. The application should include the following:
- Principal applicant
- Project title
- Goals of Project
- Plan for measurement and documentation of project efficacy and outcome
- Budget
- Plan for continuation of project at the end of funding cycle
- List of all faculty developing the project (name, department, school/institution if different from principal applicant)
- Other funding the applicant has received for curricular innovation in the past 5 years (intra- and extra-mural sources)
- Letter/s of support from Department Chair and/or other relevant supervisors*
* Letter/s of Support:
It is important that proposal applicants demonstrate that they have the capacity to realize their projects. A letter of support is required from the chair of the department and (other equivalent supervisor or chief of service) that briefly states the chair's agreement to relieve the author of a portion of his/her current responsibilities to allow time to accomplish the work described in the proposal. Additional letters of support can be included from individuals or programs that would be primarily and directly affected by or involved in a large portion of the project, other than the applicant or the key faculty described within the proposal. Similarly, if a proposal involves an enhancement of or an addition to an existing course or clerkship, the letter of support from the department chair indicating the departmental and institutional commitment to incorporate this enhancement.
Dissemination:
The APA expects that at the end of the grant period, the results of the project will be disseminated through either of the following:
- A poster presentation at a future APA meeting
- Publication in a peer-reviewed journal such as Academic
- Presentation at other education meetings such as ADMSEP, AAP or AAMC or a GEA are encouraged.
Criteria for Evaluation and Selection: Each application will be evaluated on the basis of:
- Results that are achievable in one year
- Results that are measurable
- The value and impact of the proposed project to medical student education
- The structure and uniqueness of the proposed program, its ability to be replicated and the likelihood that it will meet its stated goals
- The extent to which it fosters medical student interest in psychiatry
Who is Eligible to Apply:
Each medical school in the US and Canada is eligible to submit an application. There is no limit to the number of applications submitted by a medical school. Students and/or residents can be involved in the project as long as the principal applicant is
Grant Disbursement:
The winners will be announced on January 15, 2008 with grant disbursement soon after. Each winning project will be contacted as to the proper disbursement of grant money.
