Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program Descriptions

Fellowship Title:

Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program

Fellowship Description:

This interdisciplinary doctoral and postdoctoral program is affiliated with the departments of epidemiology and bio-statistics and with the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the School of Medicine. The program seeks to increase the epidemiologic expertise of psychiatrist and other mental health professionals, and to increase the number of epidemiologists with the interest and capacity to study psychiatric disorders. Graduates are expected to undertake careers in research on the etiology, classification, distribution, course and outcome of specific mental disorders and maladaptive behaviors. The program is funded with a training grant from the National Institute of Mental Health and includes both predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows.

Fellowship Title:

NIMH Training Program in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Fellowship Description:

The overall objective is to provide postdoctoral fellowships in psychiatric epidemiological research, specifically, (1) to establish a foundation of research expertise in the trainee's chosen field of specialization; (2) to assure a broad understanding of psychiatric epidemiology coupled with the working knowledge of genetic and neurobiologic aspects of psychiatric disorders and their comorbidity; (3) to generate sufficient knowledge in at least one additional area outside the chosen focus in order to promote collaborative efforts in future research careers; (4) to prepare fellows for teaching; (5) to develop researchers with finely honed research skills and an ability to critically evaluate and make judgments regarding both their own research and that of others; and (6) inculcate public health attitudes and increase the probability of the student's future use of epidemiological approaches to their work.

Fellowship Title:

Clinical Investigator Training Program

Fellowship Description:

The Clinical Investigators Training Program (CITP) in psychiatry at McMaster University provides comprehensive training in psychiatric research for senior residents, postgraduate students and M.D.s who have completed residency training in psychiatry or neurology. The structure of the program is flexible in order to meet individual needs but generally involves working as a member of a research team, training with a mentor, having a supervisory committee, and completing course work in appropriate areas (neurosciences, research design, biostatistics, etc.). The two major areas of research training at McMaster include epidemiology and the neurosciences. Within each of these, a wide range of training experiences is available with outstanding faculty.

Fellowship Title:

Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program

Fellowship Description:

This program provides predoctoral and postdoctoral training for research in psychiatric epidemiology. Such research requires investigators who are trained in the most current and sophisticated methods of both epidemiology and biostatistics and who understand the application of these methodologies to specific questions raised in psychiatry. The Training Program is a joint program through the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Public Health. Fellows have access to a diverse faculty whose expertise represents major aspects of psychiatric epidemiology, including substance use and abuse, child and adolescent psychiatry, mood disorders, and social and community psychiatry. Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident in accordance with NIH regulations.
