Assembly Committees
Committee on Planning
The Committee studies the Assembly and its components. It is seen as key in identifying issues related to long range planning for the Assembly and addresses emerging issues for the future of the field of psychiatry and the APA. This committee has liaison with the Committee on Procedures of the Assembly. In coordination with APA staff, the Committee on Planning has the responsibility of reviewing the budget of the Assembly and may make decisions as needed during the fiscal year to assist staff in managing resource.
Committee on Procedures
The Committee monitors the workings of the Assembly for effectiveness and efficiency. It has oversight of the Assembly Procedural Code and responsibility for receiving, studying and initiating proposals for changes to the Procedural Code and the mechanisms of operation of the Assembly. The Committee interprets the Procedural Code with regard to specific issues, challenges, or questions. It reviews the Procedural Codes of the Area Councils and the Constitutions and Bylaws of the District Branches to assure conformity with the APA Bylaws, the Operations Manual and the Procedural Code of the Assembly.
Nominating Committee
The committee is responsible for preparing a slate of candidates for Assembly office. The Committee's nominees for the Offices of Speaker-Elect and Recorder are announced at the fall meeting of the Assembly, at which time additional candidates may be nominated from the floor.
Rules Committee
The Committee considers all new business and action papers to be presented to the Assembly. It assists in the preparation of these items for presentation, rules on their appropriateness for consideration by the Assembly, and reports them to the Assembly.
Reference Committees
The Rules Committee assigns action items to appropriate Reference Committees. Reference Committee chairs lead the discussion of action items, seeking a balance of opinions. Reference Committees are designed to be impartial groups assembled for the purpose of evaluating information stemming from an open, balanced discussion of a particular subject, and making a recommendation on the floor of the Assembly regarding merits of the matter under consideration. The Committees function as a facilitator in extracting as much information as is possible to come to an informed decision before making its recommendation to the Assembly.
Committee on Public and Community Psychiatry
The Committee promotes the proper use and the proper role of psychiatrists at all levels in all public psychiatric settings and ensures quality psychiatric care for the patients treated in the public sector. It assists in the coordination of the work of the existing APA components dealing with public psychiatry and in the interests of psychiatrists working in jails and prisons.
Awards Committee
The Committee administers the Assembly Profile of Courage Award and other Assembly Awards as needed.
The Assembly has 4 committees which act as representative entities to specific member populations within the APA and Assembly. These committees are the Committee of Area Member-in-Training Representatives, Committee of Area Early Career Psychiatrist Representatives, Committee of Representatives of Minority/Underrepresented Groups and the Committee of Allied Organization Liaisons.
