Board of Trustees

The membership of the Board of Trustees is elected nationally and regionally by the APA membership. 

The voting members of the Board of Trustees are the President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary Treasurer, the three Immediate Past Presidents, the Speaker and Speaker-Elect of the Assembly, the Seven Area Trustees, Two Trustees-at-Large, the Early Career Psychiatrist Elected-at-Large and the Member-in-Training Elected-at-Large.

The non-voting members of the Board are the Past Presidents elected prior to 2000 and the Member-in-Training Elect.  Other individuals in attendance at Board meetings are the representatives from the 
APA/SAMHSA Fellowship, the APA/Bristol-Meyers Squibb Fellowship and the Medical Director/CEO.

The terms of office begin in May of each year and coincide with the beginning and end of the APA’s Annual Meeting.  The Officers of the Association, the President and President-Elect serve one year terms while the Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer serve two-year terms.  The three Past Presidents, the 7 Area Trustees, Trustees-at-Large and ECP Trustee-at-Large serve 3-year terms.  All others on the Board serve one-year terms.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, which may exercise all the powers and authority of the Board of Trustees in the management of the business and affairs of the Association as provided in the Bylaws, is comprised of the President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Speaker of the Assembly and the Immediate Past President.
