Research Training and Career Distinction Awards

APA administers an array of awards for residents and early and senior career psychiatrists in support and recognition of psychiatric research careers to help ensure the continued scientific advancement of the field.

For Residents and Fellows


Psychiatric Research Fellowship ∗ Application Deadline: October 15, 2014
$45,000 stipend to support research and personal scholarship for one year.

Research Colloquium for Junior Investigators Application Deadline: November 15, 2014
Travel support for participation in a day-long workshop at the APA Annual Meeting which provides guidance, mentorship and feedback to young investigators in the early phases of their training by mentors who are tops in their field.

Resident Research Award ∗ Application Deadline: December 1, 2014
Five $1,500 prizes for the best original, unpublished scientific papers and an additional $1,000 award to the residency training program in which the award recipients were in training at the time the work was completed.

Resident Psychiatric Research Scholars ∗ Application Deadline: January 15, 2015
A one-year mentoring and career enrichment program in which awardees will receive $2,500 to assist in their research career development. Travel support to the APA Annual Meeting is also provided.

Schizophrenia Research Fellowship ∗ Application Deadline: October 15, 2014
$45,000 stipend to support schizophrenia research and personal scholarship for one year.

For Early Career Psychiatrists


Early Academic Career Award in Schizophrenia Research ∗ Application Deadline: October 15, 2014
$45,000 stipend support to the research of a junior faculty member with an interest in schizophrenia research.

SUNSHINE ACT NOTICE: The symbol indicates that this grant, fellowship or award is supported by a pharmaceutical company that is required to publicly report any money provided to the physician, whether as stipend, meals, travel or otherwise in support of this grant, fellowship or award on a public database through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Reporting is legally required only if the physician has completed their four year residency in psychiatry. However, some of the sponsoring companies may report any physician payments regardless of the stage of their career.

Award for Research in Psychiatry
Recognizes a single distinguished and impactful contribution, body of work, or lifetime contribution in the field of psychiatry.

Early Career Award
Recognizes the best nominated Health Services Research paper published during the past year by a young researcher.

Kempf Fund Award for Research Development in Psychobiological Psychiatry Application Deadline: October 15, 2014
$1,500 prize for a senior researcher for significant contribution to research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia as both a researcher and a mentor. The award also provides $20,000 for a young research psychiatrist working in a mentor-trainee relationship with the senior award winner on further research in this field.

Research Mentorship Award
Honors a faculty mentor who has fostered the pursuit of student research within his/her university department. Jointly sponsored with the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry.

Senior Scholar Health Service Award
In recognition of distinguished career contributions to Health Services Research.
